Tangela Cheatham Joins CMU Administration

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Amy Folan, Central Michigan University Zyzelewski Family Associate Vice President/director of athletics, today announced the hire of Tangela Cheatham as CMU Athletics' next deputy athletic director for administration and senior woman administrator, effective July 12.
"Tangela is a Michigan native who brings to CMU experience from outstanding athletic programs across the country and I'm excited to welcome her to the CMU Chippewas family," Folan said. "She will be instrumental in advancing our program while also playing a key role in helping our student-athletes reach their full potential."Â
Cheatham will serve as a member of the department's executive leadership team and will oversee all facets of CMU's comprehensive student-athlete and institutional support services. These areas include admissions, compliance, financial aid, academic programs, student-athlete development, and oversight of internal operations and administrative functions.Â
As senior woman administrator — a designation created by the NCAA in 1981 — Cheatham will be responsible for promoting meaningful representation of women in the leadership and management of college sports at CMU.
Cheatham joins CMU from the United States Military Academy West Point, where she has served as associate athletics director of administration since 2021. Prior to her time at West Point, she held administrative roles at West Virginia University, overseeing student-athlete enhancement and inclusive excellence. She also served as a career specialist and academic coordinator in the athletics department at the University of Iowa.Â
"I'm excited to serve the student-athletes, coaches and staff at Central Michigan University," Cheatham said. "I'd like to thank Mike Buddie and Army Athletics for their support, and I look forward to joining Amy Folan and the CMU staff in my home state of Michigan."
Cheatham, a native of Detroit, Michigan, holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan and a Master of Education in higher education from the University of Oklahoma. She served as an intern at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and as a student gained athletics experience at both OU and UM.
