Amy Folan's Maroon & Gold Memo: Kicking Off 2023

Winning in the classroom
One of CMU Athletics' greatest victories is how our student-athletes perform in the classroom, and this past fall semester was no exception. I'm proud to announce that collectively, our student-athletes secured the department's 48th consecutive semester with an average grade point average of over 3.0. Here are some highlights:
With fewer than 2% of NCAA student-athletes going on to be professional athletes, a dual focus on academics and athletics is critical. It's why we at CMU have a strong support system in place.
Â
Congratulations to all our student-athletes for your continued academic success and pursuit of your degrees!
Â
Learning and connecting           Â
In early January, I attended the 2023 NCAA Convention in San Antonio, Texas. One highlight was the introduction of incoming NCAA President, Charlie Baker, who is the former Governor of Massachusetts. President Baker officially starts in March, and I am optimistic for what his leadership, unique background and skill set will bring. The convention also provided time to collaborate and connect with other leaders in college athletics from across the country on the challenges and opportunities we are facing together.
Â
During my time in San Antonio, I also spent time with several fabulous CMU alumni and athletics supporters who live in the area. Building meaningful relationships with alumni is important for me and for my colleagues across the university as we continue to focus on strategic growth and advancement of CMU as a whole and our athletics program.
Â
We have 235,000 alumni across the world, and I hope to continue to connect with even more of you in the future.

Men's basketball rolling into Jan. 28 game against WMU
Our team is ready for the return of the famous "toilet paper toss" at the men's basketball game vs. rival Western Michigan on Jan. 28. We're excited to welcome home Dan Majerle, who played for CMU during the time of the TP toss. Learn more about the event and how to buy tickets. I look forward to seeing you there.

- The average GPA was 3.18.
- Of our 476 student-athletes, 335 had grade points of 3.0 or higher
- 58 students had a semester GPA of 4.0!
- The majority of our teams increased their semester GPAs from fall 2021 to fall 2022.
