First Half Offensive Surge Gives Toledo 84-59 Win Over Men's Basketball

Brian Taylor leads the Chippewas with 20 points, Reggie Bass adds 10; Toledo scores 31 points on 21 CMU turnovers.
TOLEDO, Ohio—Toledo outscored Central Michigan 19-6 over an eight-minute first half span, scored 31 points off 21 CMU turnovers, and went on to register an 84-59 win over the Chippewas Saturday evening at Savage Arena.
Three players reached double figure scoring for Toledo including RayJ Dennis and Setric Millner, Jr., who both scored 18 points. JT Shumate added 12 points for the hosts, while Ra'Heim Moss, EJ Farmer, and Andre Lorentsson all added nine points.
Senior Brian Taylor led Central Michigan with a game-high 20 points on 7-13 shooting and 2-4 3-point shooting. He played the full 40 minutes. Freshman Reggie Bass scored 10 points, and freshman Max Majerle finished with nine points.
Ironically, CMU shot 52.6 percent (20-38) from the floor for the game after hitting 73.3 percent (11-15) of its shots in the second half.
Central Michigan took the floor without the services of leading scorer junior Jesse Zarzuela. The Chippewas never led in the game.
Toledo ended the first half with a 28-point lead (49-21). At halftime, the Rockets outrebounded the Chippewas 20-11, scored 19 points off turnovers, and forced 11 CMU turnovers. Meanwhile, CMU shot just 39.1 percent (9-23), fouled 11 times, and was 0-8 on 3-point attempts.
Central Michigan committed 10 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play en route to finishing with 21 on the night.
Off the opening tipoff, Toledo took advantage of two CMU turnovers to open up a 5-0 lead with a Millner layup and Moss 3-pointer. Later, a 9-0 Toledo run gave the Rockets a 27-10 lead with 9:52 to play in the first half. CMU's Brian Taylor hit a shot to end the rally. Dante Maddox Jr., scored on a layup, JT Shumate hit two free throws, Shumate followed with a layup, and Maddox nailed a 3-pointer to close out the run.
Toledo then went on a 10-0 run to go up 23 points (39-16) on an EJ Farmer layup with 3:30 to play in the first half.
Central Michigan won the second half, outscoring the Rockets 38-35 over the game's final 20 minutes.
Toledo led by as many as 33 points (60-27) with 15:32 to play in the game.
Central Michigan drops to 8-15 overall, 3-7 in the MAC. Toledo is now 17-6 overall and 8-2 in the MAC.
Next up for Central Michigan is Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
