
Tolmie, Edwards Earn Prestigious Annual Awards

Both will be introduced and honored on Saturday at CMU-Eastern Michigan football game
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan Athletics is proud to recognize the winners of its prestigious Bill Boyden Leadership Award and Dick Enberg Scholar Athlete Award for 2023: Sandy Edwards of lacrosse and Abbey Tolmie of softball, respectively. Edwards and Tolmie will be honored with an on-field ceremonies during Saturday's CMU-Eastern Michigan on Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium (1:30 p.m.).

Bill Boyden Leadership Award - Sandy Edwards (lacrosse)
Edwards, a native from Stuart, Fla. is a senior team captain double majoring in neuroscience and psychology.e  Shthe 43rd recipient of the Boyden Leadership Award, which goes to a student-athlete who has displayed a high level of leadership, community involvement, arts appreciation, and is an exemplary representative of Central Michigan University.

Edwards, who has helped the lacrosse team to back-to-back Mid-Amiercan Conference championships, earned the team's Scholar-Athlete Award in 2021, and was named to the 2023 Academic All-MAC Team.

Edwards is active in the community with organizations such as Young Life, Treasure Coast Community Church, Operation Christmas Child, and Habitat for Humanity. She is in her second year on Leadership Council, is a Central Michigan University Honors College Centralis Scholar and a CMU Denison Development Board Endowed Scholar Recipient.

Dick Enberg Scholar Athlete Award - Abbey Tolmie (softball)
Tolmie, a native of Clarkston, has been named the recipient of the 2023 Dick Enberg Scholar Athlete Award. She is a senior majoring in exercise science and kinesiology who intends to attend physician's assistant school after graduation.Â

The award goes annually to a student-athlete who carries a grade point average of 3.20 or better, has performed with distinction in their sport, and is considered a team leader. It is named in memory of the late Dick Enberg, an esteemed sports broadcaster and CMU alumnus.

Tolmie is a three-time All-MAC selection, a two-time Academic All-MAC honoree, and an Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar who has posted a 4.0 grade point average for six consecutive semesters, earning the President's Award. She has accumulated approximately 1,000 patient care hours, primarily at an Urgent Care clinic in her hometown.

She is a standout on the softball diamond, a three-year starter in the outfield with a .361 career batting average (191 hits in 528 at-bats), 47 RBI and 106 runs. She represented Canada in the 2019 Pan American Games in Colombia.Â
