MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—In celebration of its time-honored tradition, Central Michigan University will host a Toilet Paper Toss game for the second consecutive year when it plays rival Western Michigan for a men's basketball contest on Saturday, February 17 at McGuirk Arena. In addition, CMU's women's basketball game vs. Kent State that day will be played at 1 p.m.
For this highly anticipated event, tickets are $20 for lower bowl reserved seating, $17 for upper bowl reserved, $15 for Adult General Admission, and $12 for youth/senior general admission. Tickets are available by stopping by Ticket Central, calling Ticket Central at (989) 774-3045, or by purchasing to this link.
Fans who purchase a ticket to the men's basketball toilet paper toss game receive a free ticket to the women's basketball game earlier that afternoon (1 p.m. vs. Kent State). For group ticket needs of 10 or more, please reach out to Ticket Central directly at (989) 774-3045 and a sales representative will assist you in your purchase.
Also, for the first time, CMU will sell individual single game tickets in the Upper Club Lounge at McGuirk Arena. Tickets in the Upper Club Lounge are $65 per person and will include a game ticket, seating in Upper Club Lounge, and food. The purchase of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will not be included but will be available.
Student tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students will not be admitted into the event without a ticket. To attend this year's Toilet Paper Toss, students must claim a ticket through the Maroon & Gold Rewards prize store at this link. Tickets cost 200 points. Digital tickets will be sent to student e-mail addresses on Monday, Feb. 12. The first 500 students to claim their ticket via the Maroon & Gold Rewards prize store will receive a free white CMU Basketball Snake Pit t-shirt (new 2024 version) to wear to the game. These will be distributed at the CMU Ticket Office prior to game day. In addition, the first 200 student ticket holders to arrive at the arena on game day will receive a wristband for a free halftime meal courtesy of Buffalo Wild Wings.
The game is designated as a "White Out," fans are encouraged to wear white shirts, and will have the opportunity to participate in the previously nationally known CMU tradition of throwing toilet paper rolls on the playing floor. A time for the simultaneous pre-game toss will be announced later. White pompoms and rally towels will be distributed in the arena. The toilet paper will be furnished for all fans as rolls will be placed on each seat. After the throw, all toilet paper will be recycled.
The game will be sponsored by MyMichiganHealth.
"Once again we are extremely excited to bring this memorable event to our fans," Central Michigan Zyzelewski Family Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Amy Folan said. "This game will have something for everyone. We will rekindle a school tradition that everyone can participate in, play our rival in Western Michigan, and host a White-Out. I urge fans to buy their tickets now."
Last year, Central Michigan celebrated the event's 40th anniversary as it brought back the Toilet Paper Toss on January 28, 2023, vs. Western Michigan. The announced crowd of 5,425 set a new McGuirk Arena attendance record, over 1,800 students attended and participated in the game, and current senior Brian Taylor hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 6.6 seconds to play as Central Michigan defeated Western Michigan 70-69.
The toilet paper toss tradition began at Central Michigan during the 1982-83 basketball season with the first event occurring in early February 1983. The fad was short-lived but was brought back in 1986 by the athletic department. An iconic photograph during the Feb. 18, 1987, game against Western Michigan, taken by CMU photographer Peggy Brisbane, was published in People Magazine.
During that time, Central Michigan's student section was known as the Snake Pit. During games, the student group sported maroon t-shirts depicting a snake logo. Legend has it that a rival coach referred to playing a game in the arena as being in a "snake pit" and the name was subsequently adopted by the CMU student section.
