Jakobi Heady and Anthony Pritchard lead the Chippewas with 18 points apiece; eight players combine for 12 3-pointers in exhibition victory.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Eight players hit 3-pointers and four reached double-figure scoring as Central Michigan fans received their first glimpse of the 2024-25 men's basketball team Sunday afternoon at McGuirk Arena as the Chippewas downed NCAA Division II Hillsdale 90-63.
The Chippewas led the entire way, converted 12 3-pointers (48 percent), outrebounded Hillsdale by nine boards, and held the visitors to 43.4 percent shooting in a promising all-around performance.
Jacobi Heady and Anthony Pritchard both scored 18 points apiece to lead the Chippewas. Kyle VanderJagt and Damarion Bonds both contributed 12 of 11 points respectively off the bench as the Chippewas converted 51.6 percent (33-64) of their field goals
In his debut outing, Heady also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and displayed a soft shooting touch with two 3-pointers. Pritchard was his normal efficient self as he converted all eight of his field goal attempts, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out three assists in 24 minutes of action. VanderJagt also added three steals on defense. Center Hunter Harding led the Chippewas with four assists.
CMU built a 23-point halftime lead, then coasted throughout the second half, never letting Hillsdale to cut the margin to fewer than 19 points. The Chippewas pushed the lead to 26 points several times late in the second half. A 3-pointer by Pritchard gave the Chippewas a 77-51 lead with 9:33 to play.
The game started off with Jakobi Heady draining two 3-pointers, the second of which he banked in. Harding made it 9-2 with a 3-pointer of his own, and VanderJagt hit a turnaround jumper in the lane and CMU led 11-2 after the game's first four minutes. A deep 3-pointer by VanderJagt gave CMU an 18-10 lead with 13:05 to play in the first half. CMU led by as many as 29 points with 7:57 to play.
CMU used a 6-0 run to go up 24-14 with 8:41 to go in the first half. Pritchard converted a layup, Vasko hit two free throws, and Damarion Bonds scored on a layup. Minutes later, Heady gave CMU its largest lead up to that point, 28-17, on a driving dunk with 7:22 to play in the first half.
Bonds hit a 3-pointer for a 33-19 CMU lead with 5:51 to play in the first half. The Chippewas took a 49-26 lead into halftime, their largest lead in the first half by closing the period on a jumper by Bonds and driving jumper by Heady. Heady scored 14 points, VanderJagt had nine, and Bonds had eight at the half.
CMU's five starters were Anthony Pritchard, Jakobi Heady, Hunter Harding, Bryan Ndjonga, and Cayden Vasko. Four CMU players did not see action.
