Amy Folan's Maroon & Gold Memo: Legends, Memories, and Student Engagement

Going out in style
On the heels of his team winning this year's Mid-American Conference Championship — the 15th of his career — wrestling coach Tom Borrelli announced his retirement.
Tom is one of the sport's all-time winningest coaches and is highly respected among his peers. He's also a true CMU legend and well-loved within the campus community and beyond.
Since becoming CMU's head coach in 1991, he has captured 30 MAC championships, including regular season titles. He's also been named MAC Coach of the Year 15 times, with the last of these coming at the end of his reign.
Thank you, Tom, for your dedication to Central Michigan and all of the student-athletes, coaches and others you've impacted over the years. Enjoy your retirement — you will be missed!
Making memories and engaging students
When talking with student-athletes and fans over the past year, I repeatedly have heard that the Toilet Paper Toss game in 2023 was one of their favorite memories. So, we decided to make even more memories at our second consecutive Toilet Paper Toss men's basketball game on Feb. 17 against rival Western Michigan.
A sold-out McGuirk Arena crowd helped propel our team to a huge win and proved once again that we have the best fans in the MAC.
Our students play a significant role in that, but isn't always easy for them to cheer our teams on when we're on the road. A new fund, established with the help of a generous gift from CMU retirees and avid athletics supporters Tony and Kim Voisin, will provide more opportunities for our students to be involved in athletics.
The Voisin's story is a shining example of how our incredible supporters can combine their history, passions and future to leave a lasting legacy on CMU and our athletics program. We're excited to have a special announcement within the next month about how we'll continue to focus on investment in CMU Athletics, and how all of you can play a role in that. Stay tuned!
Looking ahead
Good luck to our spring sports — men's and women's golf, baseball, softball, lacrosse and outdoor track and field — which are now in full swing. We have a lot to look forward to in the next few months.
It also isn't too early to look ahead to fall — our football team opened its spring practices last week, and 2024 football season tickets are now on sale!
