MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan student-athletes supported the Greater Mount Pleasant community in 2023-24 as the Chippewas participated in 239 volunteer events and combined to amass a total of 3,735 community service hours. Those numbers generated an economic impact of $118,787 to the Mount Pleasant community.
All 17 Chippewa athletics teams were involved in the Mount Pleasant community and a total of 90 percent of CMU student-athletes (453 of 504) served in some capacity.
"These numbers are indicative of the type of student-athletes we have at Central Michigan," Zyzelewski Family Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Amy Folan said. "We are extremely proud of what our student-athletes have been able to accomplish in the Mount Pleasant community this year. They have made a tremendous impact in a variety of local areas including the civic and community realm, education sector, along with children and youth."
"All of these activities enhance the lives of our student-athletes and better prepare them for life after CMU."
The most impactful events during the year included the Fire Up Canned Food Drive, where CMU student-athletes were able to donate 1,635 cans of food, the Trunk or Treat event, which 92 student-athletes attended, and Habitat for Humanity, where CMU athletes combined for 372 hours of service. Other top organizations and causes included the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, where student-athletes donated 74 hours of community service, the PEAK After School Program, where CMU student-athletes volunteered 361 hours, Mount Pleasant Public Schools, and the Isabella Community Soup Kitchen.
The top five performing Central Michigan teams include women's soccer (1,047 hours), lacrosse (960 hours), softball (658 hours), women's cross country/track and field (205 hours), and volleyball (113 hours).
