Chris McMillian has been promoted to associate head coach and Chris Reeves is now the Chippewas’ director of men’s basketball operations.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan head men's basketball coach Tony Barbee announced the promotion of two coaching staff members on Wednesday as Chris McMillian has been named the associate head coach and Chris Reeves is now the program's director of men's basketball operations.
The duo has played key roles in helping Barbee guide CMU to the top of the Mid-American Conference as the Chippewas challenged for a league title with a 12-6 league record last season in 2023-24. CMU's 12 league wins were the most at the school since the 2014-15 season at Central Michigan. Prior to the 2023-24 season, the coaching staff rebuilt CMU's roster with only four players returning as they added 12 new players and blended them into a team that challenged for the MAC title. In the preseason coaches' poll, CMU was picked to finish in 12th place out of 12 teams. The Chippewas ended up finishing the regular season fourth in the league standings and entered the MAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed.
McMillian begins his fourth full season on the Central Michigan men's basketball staff. He joined Barbee's staff in May 2021 as an assistant coach after working two years as an assistant coach at Idaho State University (2019-21). McMillian has also spent time at Illinois-Chicago (2015-19), College of Southern Idaho (2014-15), Hawaii (2010-14), and Centenary (2009-10). The Brea, Calif. native played four years of basketball at Wyoming (1998-03) and led the Cowboys to two Mountain West Conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. In 125 career contests at guard, he averaged 6.8 points, 3.5 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game. He graduated with a degree in 2003 and earned his master's degree from Hawaii in 2013.
Reeves is in the second year of his second stint on the Central Michigan coaching staff. He joined Barbee's staff in July 2023 as its director of player development and previously worked at CMU from 2019-21 as assistant director of men's basketball operations. He returned to CMU after working two years as a junior college assistant coach in Florida at Indian River College (2022-23) and State College of Florida (2021-22). A Chicago, Ill. native, Reeves graduated from the University of Oregon in 2018.
Central Michigan will announce its entire 2024-25 schedule at some point in the next few weeks.
