MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—The Central Michigan Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted a Connections that Count event last night where 71 student-athletes from 15 different varsity sports led more than 50 participants in different skills and drills related to the student-athlete's specific sports.
Connections That Count (CTC) provides a safe place for area youth impacted by disabilities and families in the surrounding Mount Pleasant community to connect with CMU student leaders and participate in fun activities.
This was the second annual SAAC night for this group and one that the student-athletes have said they will continue to host in the future.
"It was a great experience to connect student athletes to a community of individuals that aren't recognized nearly enough," Central Michigan track and field athlete Grace Jenkins said. "The excitement of the athletes working with these individuals brought the biggest smile to my face. The goal was to provide an opportunity for the participants to partake in every sport CMU offers, so everyone can play a sport they love and maybe learn a new one that they haven't tried before."
This was the second major community outreach initiative of the year for SAAC. In November, the CMU athletics student organization hosted the Fired Up Canned Food Drive in competition with Western Michigan's Athletic Department. This year, CMU donated 2,258 items with a total weight of 1,750 pounds. All items were donated to the CMU Food pantry.
