Cockerel brings the award home for the Chippewa’s men’s team for the first time since 2017
CLEVELAND — Junior Nick Cockerel has been named the Mid-American Conference Co-Runner of the Week, alongside the University of Massachusetts' Ken O'Brien, Wednesday morning.
Cockerel becomes the first Chippewa men's runner to earn the honors since October of 2017, when Alec Omell took home the award.
In Friday's 40th Annual Jeff Drenth Memorial 5k, Cockerel placed third in the field. He set a new personal best of 15:10.97, eclipsing his previous 5k best of 15:29.7 at the 2024 Drenth.
Cockerel's efforts helped propel the men's cross country team to finish second of eight at the Drenth.
The last Chippewa Cross Country runner to earn runner of the week in any capacity was in September of 2024, with Natalie Newcombe earning the honors.
Cockerel will rejoin the Chippewas when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. on Sept. 19 at the George Dales Classic.
