Central Michigan Statement Regarding the Sale of Unlicensed, Unapproved, and Offensive CMU-Themed Merchandise

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—In response to reports of unlicensed, unapproved, and offensive CMU-themed merchandise being sold, Central Michigan University has issued the following statement regarding such items:
"As dedicated CMU Chippewa supporters and fans, you know how much we value our partnership with our neighbors and friends in the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. And, out of respect for the Tribe, its members, and all Indigenous people, we ask CMU fans to avoid purchasing or wearing unlicensed, unapproved CMU-themed merchandise that uses negative, offensive or stereotypical images of Indigenous people. Join us in respectful celebration of our partnership with the Tribe by visiting our "Honor the Chippewa Name" webpage."
