Schulman, Morgan, Fennell, Niskanen, Dull in top 10 in 81-player field entering Monday's final round
KEWADIN, Mich. – Never has there been a better day in the 13-year history of Central Michigan women's golf.
It could get even better on Monday.
The Chippewas opened the 2026-27 season with a boom, setting program 18- and 36-hole records and notching myriad firsts during the first two rounds Sunday in their own A-Ga-Ming Invitational at A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort.
The Chippewas opened with a 5-under par 283 and then posted a second-round 4-over 292 for a 1-under 575. Both the opening 5-under 283 and 36-hole 1-under 575 are program records, and mark the first time the Chippewas have been under par as a team after 18 holes or after 36.
They are in first place, 15 shots ahead of second-place Loyola-Chicago in the 13-team field. The final 18-hole round is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday.
The Chippewas are vying for their first victory since March 21, 2023, when they captured the Nevel Meade Collegiate in Prospect, Ky. They are vying for their first win at A-Ga-Ming since 2021.
"We had a really, really great day," fifth-year CMU coach Ryan Williams said. "I was excited to see the kids play the way I know that they can, and I'm excited to see them continue to push and try to keep going lower and try to keep making birdies.
"Tomorrow, it's more of the same. We have some goals in mind and we're playing to keep shooting low numbers. I don't want to go out there and play conservative and play to protect a lead. We need to stick to our game plan and keep being aggressive.
"The golf course is out there to get if you play smart and steady golf. You don't have to do anything super aggressive or that spectacular, but if you're playing steady and committed to smart targets, you're going to get opportunities.
"We'd love to see a red number next to our team name after this tournament and we think we're right there."
The Chippewas' first-round 5-under 283 broke the program 18-hole record both in relation to par and in aggregate score. The previous low was 287 (Bowling Green Invitational at Wigwam, Feb. 18, 2026) and the previous low in relation to par was 3-over (three times, the last at Wigwam).
The 1-under 575 is also a program best, both in aggregate total and in relation to par, bettering the 9-over 585 the Chippewas posted at the MAC Challenge in September, 2023.
An incredible five Chippewas are in the top 10, led by surging senior Lexi Schulman, who opened with a 1-under 71 and followed with a 2-under 70 for a 3-under 141 total. She is along in second place, two shots behind Grace Hui of Loyola-Chicago, who is 5-under (70-69).
Both totals bettered Schulman's previous career-best 72 and her 141 36-hole is five shots better than her previous career low. She made nine birdies over her first 36 holes, the second-highest total in the 81-player field.
"I am personally very excited for Lexi to have had a day like she had today," Williams said. "She works hard, she's gone through some things and she started playing really well last spring and she brought that with her this fall. She's always been capable of it and we're excited to see her show it."
Chippewa freshman Mya Morgan, playing in her first collegiate event, opened with a 3-under 69 and then posted a 3-over 75 in the second round. She is tied for third with Louise Standtke of Indiana State and teammate Elise Fennell, a junior who transferred to CMU this season from Illinois State.
Fennell opened with a 1-under 71 and then shot a 1-over 73. Fennell, Morgan and Standtke are at even par entering Monday's final round.
Morgan's 3-under 69 ties for the second-best single round in program history. Fennell made 30 pars on the day, tying for the most in the field.
"Mya had a really great first round," Williams said. "She got hot and made some birdies and it's great to see a freshman in her first college tournament be able to do that. Elise is a newcomer who is adding a bit of a spark to our lineup. She's capable of making a lot of birdies and today she didn't, but she made a ton of pars and was just so steady and consistent."
CMU senior Rachel Niskanen (74-71 – 145) and Chippewa sophomore Zoe Dull (72-74 – 146) are also in the top 10. Niskanen, playing as an individual, is sixth and Dull is tied for seventh. Dull, who tied her career best with her opening 72, carded 29 pars on the day; Niskanen's 145 is a career best for 36 holes.
The Chippewas made a tournament-high 123 pars on the day and were second with 25 birdies.
"The first round, we got off to a bit of a slow start, but everyone was playing solid and being patient and were ready when putts started to fall," Williams said. "It's really good to see; it shows some maturity and a group that's eager to compete and shoot good scores and it's exciting that we had that type of day.
"It's exciting to see the entire team play well and have solid rounds and it's great to see them battle and finish rounds strong."
