Speaker Addresses Spring Break Tragedy
Jan. 16, 2003
Mark Sterner and his four Fraternity brothers had been partying straight for one week on Sanible Island. It was the best spring break until he awoke in the hospital to discover that while he and one of his other friends had sustained serious injuries, three of his close friends had been killed in the car he was driving.
Mark was incarcerated for three years and has since spent the last six years addressing groups about the tragic results of 'driving under the influence'. Mark was three months away from becoming the first member of his family to graduate from college, but instead he became the first to go to jail. "Life is all about choices, and I made the wrong one," Sterner said. "I can only hope I can help someone else make the right one the next time they consider drinking and driving."
Mark says his program is blunt, honest, and tremendously moving. Since 1996, his ultimate challenge is living with the reality that he is responsible for killing three of his friends. Mark Sterner is a participant in the NCAA Campus Speak Program.
