CMU Athletics And URec To Host Girls And Women In Sports Day
Jan. 29, 2002
Central Michigan University athletics department and University Recreation (URec) are hosting the Third Annual Girls and Women in Sports Day...Celebrating 30 Years of Title IX.
The event takes place on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Student Activity Center.
Girls ages eight to 13 and their mothers or mentors can participate for $10 per girl/mother pair. Clinics are conducted by the coaches and athletes of the CMU field hockey, soccer and softball teams.
In the mini-clinics, girls and their mothers will meet the athletes, participate in a skills session and receive information about fitness and sports. They will also watch approximately 10 minutes of the women's basketball team shoot-around.
"This is a great opportunity for young girls to identify with sports and with college student athletes," said Senior Associate Athletics Director Marcy Weston. "The clinic will be an introduction to the importance of sport and activity in life."
Colleges and universities across the country are also encouraged to host the event.
"We are trying to create an atmosphere that puts importance on activity and encourages participation in any fitness or sport activity," said Weston.
All participants should wear attire appropriate for athletic participation.
Space is still available. Contact Laurie Braden with questions or for a registration form at 989-774-7319.
