CMU Student Government Association Supports Athletics Fee
Feb. 6, 2004
MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University athletics director Herb Deromedi is pleased with the support of the Student Government Association in the proposed one-time athletics fee.
"We met with the Student Government Association to explain our proposal and it's gratifying that the students recognized our need," said Deromedi.
The proposed fee would be $300 for incoming freshman and $200 for transfer students.
"I felt it was extremely important for the SGA to voice their support for our athletes," said Nick Norcross, an SGA student service committee co-chairman who co-sponsored the resolution. "We have to keep in mind that our athletes are student-athletes and are part of the same student body as the rest of us. Their needs must be addressed as much as the rest of ours."
The bill needed a simple majority of the general voting board to pass and did so with 78 percent of the vote.
Ten of the 13 Mid-American Conference schools already have a similar student-supported athletics fee in place.
Funds from the fee, according to Deromedi, would be used for replacing the turf at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, adding another women's sport to be in compliance with Title IX and additional capital improvements.
Whether the fee is adopted or not depends on approval of the Board of Trustees.
