Stabley to Help Celebrate the Rewarding Life of Earvin Johnson

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University sports information director Fred Stabley Jr., is part of a red-carpet tribute that celebrates the inspiring and rewarding life that Earvin "Magic" Johnson has led both on and off the basketball court.
A host of notable people from Johnson's life will give a brief presentation at the star-studded gala at the famed Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. American Express Celebrates the Rewarding Life of Earvin Johnson takes place on Thursday, Feb. 12, and the event will air nationally on TNT on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 6 to 7 p.m.
When he was a writer at the Lansing State Journal, Stabley gave Johnson the nickname "Magic" after seeing him play several times for Lansing Everett High School. Johnson went on to a decorated high school, college and professional basketball career.
The celebration includes musical performances by Big Boi of OutKast, Jessica Simpson, Earth, Wind & Fire, and others, along with special guests Charles Barkley, Andy Garcia, Earl Monroe and dozens of other NBA and Hollywood stars.
The event coincides with the NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles this weekend. Former CMU standout Chris Kaman is also part of the activities on Friday night as the Los Angeles Clippers center is a participant in the got milk? Rookie Challenge game between NBA rookies and sophomores. The game will air live on TNT at 9 p.m., on Feb. 13.
