Burtinsky and LaFavors Named CMU Scholar-Athletes of the Week

Central Michigan University has selected Sara Burtinsky (gymnastics) and Jeff LaFavors (baseball) as CMU Scholar-Athletes of the Week. Candidates for CMU Scholar-Athletes of the Week must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and are selected based on athletic performance the previous week. Here are this week's honorees and their credentials:

Burtinsky won three individual MAC titles in leading the Chippewas to their second straight MAC Championship on Friday. Burtinsky ended teammate Kara Reighard's two-year reign as all-around champion by scoring 39.550 and taking the top spot. The junior also took first with a school and MAC-meet record 9.975 on the beam and took the top spot on the bars with a 9.925. CMU set a MAC Championship record with a score of 197.525.

LaFavors notched his first-career grand slam in the first inning of the Chippewas' 20-8 win over Illinois State on Saturday afternoon. He went 2-for-2 in the game, with his other hit being a double. The junior went 1-for-2 in CMU's only other win of the week, a 6-3 defeat of the Redbirds on Friday. LaFavors ended the five-game week with four RBI and a .375 batting average.
