MAC Announces Reese/Jacoby All-Sports Winners
May 29, 2003
The Mid-American Conference announced its top institutional awards for overall athletic achievement as Miami University (men's) and Ball State University (women's) were honored for the 2002-2003 season. Miami won the Reese Award for a MAC record 21st time while Ball State earned its fifth Jacoby Trophy and fourth in a row.
The Reese Trophy is an annual trophy named for former MAC commissioner David E. Reese awarded to the MAC university with the six-highest finishes in the 11 men's sports for which the MAC sponsors championships. The top six sports per university are to be counted; however, three of the six must be football, basketball, and baseball. Schools may count only one track and field score, indoor or outdoor, but not both.
The Jacoby Trophy is an annual trophy named for former MAC commissioner Fred Jacoby, awarded to the MAC university with the six-highest finishes in the 12 women's sports for which the MAC sponsors championships. The top-six sports per university are to be counted; however, three of the six must be basketball, volleyball, and softball.
Miami's men's program totaled 64.5 points, edging runner-up Kent State by one point. Northern Illinois was a close third with 63 points. The RedHawks' performance included second-place finishes in baseball and golf, third place in cross country, a tie for third in basketball, sixth in football and fourth in swimming and diving.
Ball State's women captured its fourth consecutive honor by a three-point margin over Kent State (66-63). The Cardinals had a first-place finish in volleyball and a first-place tie in basketball. They had three second place finishes - soccer, cross country and indoor track and field - and a tie for ninth in softball.
