Chippewas Finish Second and Third in MAC All-Sport Standings
June 4, 2004
MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University finished in the top three in both the Mid-American Conference's Reese and Jacoby Trophy standings in 2003-04. The Reese Trophy is awarded to the top men's program in the all-sports standings while the Jacoby Trophy is presented to the top women's program.
Kent State won the Jacoby Trophy for the top women's program this season while Miami took the Reese Trophy on the men's side.
Points are awarded based on each school's finish, with the overall total divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school. An institution may count either indoor track and field or outdoor track and field, but not both.
Kent State's women totaled 96.5 points for its nine sports, an averaged of 10.7. CMU and Western Michigan were right behind at 9.4 and 9.3, respectively.
Miami's men totaled 67.5 points for its seven sports for an average of 9.6, just ahead of KSU's 9.4 score. CMU finished third at 8.6.
The Chippewas posted seven MAC titles this season, four on the women's side and three on the men's side.
The gymnastics and softball teams both won the conference crown along with the women's track team winning both the indoor and the outdoor championship (only one counted in the Jacoby standings, though). The volleyball team also won the MAC West Division and tied for second overall.
The men's cross country team won a MAC title along with the wrestling and baseball teams.
The Reese and Jacoby Trophies are named in honor of former MAC Commissioners David E. Reese and Fred Jacoby. Reese was the first-ever MAC Commissioner and served the league from its inception in 1946 until 1964. Jacoby led the league from 1971-82 and is credited with incorporating women's athletics into the league's structure. Jacoby currently serves as commissioner of the Lone Star Conference in Texas.
CMU has won the Jacoby Trophy twice and the Reese trophy once. Miami has won the Reese a conference-best 22 times while Ball State and Kent State are tied for the most Jacoby Trophies with five each.
