CMU Among MAC's Best In Sears Cup
July 10, 2000
MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University finished second among Mid-American Conference (MAC) schools in The Sears Directors Cup for 1999-2000.
The Chippewas, second in the MAC to Kent's 65th place finish, were 91st in the nation for Division I schools in the rankings that recognize the best overall athletics program (combining men and women). A total of 324 schools compete in Division I athletics.
Stanford was the overall champion.
"This places us well into the top one-third on a national level and that's something we can be proud of," said Central Michigan Athletics Director Herb Deromedi. "It shows that our student-athletes and programs are competing at a high level.
"To finish ahead of everyone in the conference but Kent is a big plus for CMU."
The Chippewas' top finish nationally in 1999-2000 was 20th by Coach Tom Borrelli's wrestling team.
Sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co., the Sears Director's Cup scoring is an intricate system based on national performance. Kent had 258 points and Central 168.5.
