McAlpin Named Academic Adviser
July 10, 2002
MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University athletics director Herb Deromedi announced the promotion of Deb McAlpin to academic adviser. McAlpin spent the last three years as the Life Skills coordinator on the academic support staff.
McAlpin will take on additional student-athlete advising responsibilities and will work directly with the field hockey, wrestling, volleyball, soccer and men's and women's track and cross country teams. She will also write the student-athlete newsletter, arrange major speakers and handle the Indoor Athletic Complex computer lab.
"I've enjoyed working with the student-athletes for the past three years and I'm excited about expanding my advising responsibilities," McAlpin said.
With McAlpin's help, CMU's Life Skills Program was one of only three schools to be nationally recognized with the CHAMPS Program of Excellence Award for the 2000-01 academic year.
Before joining the CMU Athletics Department, McAlpin taught physical education and coached swimming in the Mount Pleasant School District. She earned a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College and a master's degree in sport administration from CMU.
McAlpin replaces Jason Holtman who accepted a similar position at Illinois. McAlpin's efforts will be coordinated through Pat Podoll, assistant athletics director for academics.
