Hall Of Fame Profile: Gloria Neve
Nov. 15, 2002
The Central Michigan University Athletics Department will induct a new class into its Hall of Fame tonight, Friday, November 15. CMUCHIPPEWAS.COM profiled one inductee per day this week.
MOUNT PLEASANT -- Gloria Neve was much more than a multi-sport standout at Central Michigan University in the early 1960s. She was a coach on the field.
"Gloria directed the play of the others," said Jane McNamara, her field hockey coach at CMU. "She was a great leader. She was never critical of others, and was particularly good with helping the younger players."
Neve's career with the Chippewas began with field hockey, and before her playing days were over, she also competed in volleyball, basketball, and softball.
For her outstanding efforts at CMU, Neve will be inducted into CMU's Athletic Hall of Fame tonight at The Comfort Inn.
The long-time Eastern Michigan University professor will be one of six feted at the ceremony that begins with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 7 p.m.
Also being inducted are Jeff Bender (football), Mary Bottaro (field hockey coach), Dave Grauzer (basketball), Denny McNamara (baseball), and Pam Stanley (softball).
"She was good in all of the sports but her best were field hockey and softball," said McNamara, also a member of the Hall of Fame.
Neve competed at CMU from 1960-64. She made the Michigan All-Star field hockey team in 1963 that played the touring German National team.
Neve, who earned a bachelor's degree in 1964 and a master's in 1969 from CMU, has worked as a professor at Eastern Michigan since 1969. She also served as softball and basketball coach at EMU. A native of Howard City, Gloria has served as the president of the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation and lives in Ypsilanti.
