Michigan Sports Hall of Fame to Induct Deromedi
Dec. 15, 2003
MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University athletics director Herb Deromedi will be inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame on March 30, 2004 at the Renaissance Center Marriott in Detroit.
Deromedi, synonymous with Chippewa athletics since 1967, was one of 10 inductees announced Monday in Allen Park. He'll join Jim Abbott, Joe DeLamielleure, Bill Davidson, Mike Ilitch, Pat LaFontaine, Mike Lucci, George Puscas, Chris Spielman and the late Fred Stabley Sr.
"I'm truly humbled," Deromedi said. "It's obviously a tremendous honor to be selected and to be a part of a group of individuals that have played such a major role in sports in the state of Michigan.
"I have many people to thank for this honor. It was all made possible by opportunities that were presented to me by others that started when I was a youth."
A native of Royal Oak, Deromedi came to CMU in 1967 as an assistant coach under Roy Kramer. He served as the defensive coordinator from 1969-77 when he became the head coach. During his 16 years in charge of Chippewa football, his teams went 110-55-10 (.657) and won Mid-American Conference titles in 1979, '80 and '90.
Deromedi, still the winningest coach in MAC history, became CMU's athletics director on June 1, 1994 and has been the mastermind behind the extensive improvements and expansions of Chippewa athletic facilities.
