Extra Benefits
An extra benefit is defined as any special arrangement provided to a prospect or a current student-athlete, their family and/or their friends by an institutional employee or representative of the institution's athletics interest, that is not expressly authorized by NCAA regulations. Specifically prohibited financial aid, benefits and arrangements include, but are not limited to the following:
- Use of automobile or other personal property (e.g., boats, houses, motorcycles)
-
Gift items (e.g., jewelry, electronics, clothes, holiday presents, gift certificates)
-
Purchase of meals or services at commercial establishments
-
Free or reduced housing costs
-
Payment of fees for athletic camps or training programs
-
Promise of employment after college graduation
-
Special discounts or payment arrangements
- Entertaining prospects and/or the prospect's relatives/friends at any site either on- or off-campus
Essentially, an extra benefit is any item or service, that is not expressly available to the general public, but offered to a prospective or current student-athlete based on their status as an athlete. (Example: Jane, 5-star track & field recruit, is given a free smoothie at Smile Smoothie because she is wearing her athletics apparel.) Extra benefits are impermissible, the receipt of an extra benefit risks the eligibility of the student-athlete and will result in a violation of NCAA rules.
