Midwestern native Josh Fleming, a former Ferris State assistant and player, is now in his second season as Director of Player Development at Central Michigan. He works with head coach Andy Bronkema on the Chippewa men’s basketball staff.
“Coach Fleming was a day one no-brainer hire for me as he served as my top assistant for the last three years,” Bronkema said. “Josh played for me while I was an assistant coach, he volunteered for me and was my top assistant. He is a budding young coach and gets better every day I’m with him. His willingness to do whatever it takes to impact winning, and impact young men is second to none.”
“Josh was a decorated player, a Chicago area native and also played three years of professional basketball. His ability to relate to the players and his loyalty are among his many great qualities.”
“I am grateful to Coach Bronkema and Central Michigan for the opportunity to serve this University and community,” Fleming said. “I look forward to working with our players and coaching staff to bring Central Michigan to the top of the MAC. Fire up Chips!”
Fleming joined Central Michigan after working five years under Bronkema: two seasons as an assistant coach (2020-22), followed by three as Ferris State’s top assistant (2022-25). He played for the Bulldogs from 2012-16. Over the last three years, he helped the Bulldogs achieve a 77-26 record, three NCAA Division II tournament appearances, and a 39-17 GLIAC regular-season record. In 2023-24, Ferris State won the GLIAC Tournament and Midwest Regional Championships, advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
A Chicago native, Fleming helped lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back GLIAC Tournament Championships in his final years as an FSU student-athlete (2014-15 and 2025-16). He was a two-time All-GLIAC honoree and finished his career as a 1,000-point scorer. As a senior in 2015-16, he helped take Ferris State to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen. Fleming was a four-year letterwinner and starter who helped lay the foundation for the Bulldogs' march to the 2018 NCAA Division II National Championship.
After his time at Ferris State, Fleming played overseas. He competed for Iska Svit in Slovakia in 2016-17. He then played for Appel in Cyprus during the 2017-18 season.
At Ferris State, Fleming was active in the community. He served on the substitute teaching staff for Big Rapids Public Schools for two years. He was involved in the FSU program in recruiting, player development, and coaching.
Fleming graduated from Ferris State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2016.
Before FSU, Fleming was a standout at Glenbard North High School on Chicago's west side. He earned Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) All-State accolades.
