Brandon Johnson-Farrell is in his first season on head coach Matt Drinkall’s coaching staff as its wide receivers coach.
A nine-year coaching veteran, Johnson-Farrell joins the Central Michigan coaching staff after serving one season as the wide receivers coach at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. Previously, he coached with CMU Offensive Coordinator Jim Chapin and Offensive Line Coach Hayden Mace at various stops including Eastern Washington and Sioux Falls.
Last year at Lindenwood, Johnson-Farrell helped wide receiver Jeff Caldwell earn All-America honors after finishing eighth in the nation in yards per reception (19.47) and 12th in touchdown receptions (11).
In 2023, he worked as the running backs coach at Eastern Washington with Chapin and Mace, where he played a key role on an offense that ranked No. 15 nationally in scoring offense (32.3 points per game) and No. 21 nationally in offensive yards per game (417.6).
At Valdosta State in 2022, Johnson-Farrell coached two all-conference wide receivers in Victor Talley and BK Smith. Valdosta State was the only team in the Gulf South Conference to finish with two wide receivers ranked among the league’s top-5 in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. The duo helped the Blazers’ offense average 476 yards per game (No. 5 nationally) and score 36.6 points per game (No. 12 nationally).
Johnson-Farrell spent a combined six seasons at the University of Sioux Falls, where he served as the special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach for five years from 2018-21. While at Sioux Falls, he mentored 10 players to all-conference honors while the Cougars made three playoff appearances. His receiving groups have been among the best in the NSIC and in 2021, his special teams units achieved program bests in blocked punts (four), kickoff coverage average (15.8 yards), and net punting (38.8 yards).
Johnson-Farrell was a graduate assistant with the Cougars from 2016-17. In 2017, he coached a pair of running backs to all-conference recognition after the team averaged 190 yards rushing per game. During the 2016 season, the Cougars finished 11-0 during the regular season, won the NSIC Championship, earned a playoff appearance and the No. 8 national ranking in the final AFCA poll.
The Odenton, Md. native played collegiately at the University of Rhode Island, where he had a prolific career as a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association wide receiver. As a four-year starter, he ranked among school career and season leaders in several receiving and return statistics and registered 198 receptions, 2,064 receiving yards, and 5,083 all-purpose yards.
He went on to play in the Indoor Football League, where he was named the 2015 IFL United Bowl Most Valuable Player.
Johnson-Farrell graduated from Rhode Island in 2012 with a degree in human development. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in business administration from Sioux Falls in 2017.
