Jim Chapin is in his first season as Central Michigan’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. With 17 years of experience and success at every stop of his career, Chapin arrives at Central Michigan after serving three seasons (2022-24) as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Eastern Washington University in Cheyney, Wash.
Under EWU head coach Aaron Best, Chapin guided the Eagles offense to a top-10 offense in the FCS. In 2024, the Eagles averaged 442.0 yards per game, which ranked No. 6 nationally and 35.8 points per game, which also ranked No. 6 nationally. The Eagles shifted to a run-heavy offense after injuries sidelined two of their top wide receivers. As a result, the Eagles ranked No. 5 nationally in rushing with an average of 229.2 yards per game. In 2023, EWU ranked 15th nationally in scoring offense with 32.3 points per game and 21st nationally in yards per game with 417.6.
Chapin spent four seasons (2017-21) at the University of Sioux Falls where he served as the associate head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. In 2021, NCAA Division II the USF Cougars finished 8-3 overall and won a Northern Sun Conference South Division title while Chapin led an offense that averaged 412.8 yards per game, along with 32.5 points per game and 6.2 yards per play. Under Chapin, the Cougars led the NSIC in rushing yards per game (217.2 yards per game), which ranked No. 7 nationally. Sioux Falls also allowed only eight sacks in 2021, which also ranked No. 7 in the nation. Running back Thuro Reisdorfer was nominated for the 2021 Harlon Hill Award, NCAA Division II’s national player of the year.
The Cougars had a winning record all four seasons under Chapin as the offensive coordinator, going a combined 32-14 (.696) during his tenure. Other highlights during Chapin’s time at Sioux Falls NCAA Division II playoff appearances in 2017 and 2019 and a No. 20 final ranking in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll in 2017.
Chapin also coached offensive tackle Trey Pipkins who was drafted in the third round in the 2019 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Chargers. Also in 2018, Chapin coached running back Gabe Watson to a NSIC Offensive Player of the Year nod along with a Super Region 4 Player of the Year honor. During his tenure, Chapin coached two first team All-Americans, three All Region honorees, eight first team NSIC selections, and 14 second team NSIC selections.
Chapin also worked as the special teams coordinator and running backs coach at UC Davis from 2015 to 2016. At UC Davis, he coached running back Manu Luuga to a second team All-Big Sky Conference nod.
Chapin also served stints at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2012-2014) and Adrian College (2010-2011). In his three seasons at IUP, he worked as the running backs coach, the team won a PSAC Championship in 2012 and concluded the season nationally ranked after reaching the NCAA quarterfinals. He coached two first team All-PSAC West recipients and the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year among several other AP All-American and Super Region honorees.
A native of Troy, Mich, he began his coaching career at his alma mater Troy High School and Dexter High School after graduating from the University of Michigan in spring 2009.
Both of his parents are Central Michigan graduates.
