Travis Downing is in his second year as the Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Leadership & Development.
Downing oversees all programming and events aimed at preparing CMU student-athletes for success in their post-graduation pursuits, centering around career development, leadership development, personal enhancement, community outreach, diversity, equity and inclustion, and NIL. Downing also serves as the sport administrator for the men's and women's cross country, gymnastics, and men's and women's indoor/outdoor track and field teams. Downing spent the previous 18 months as the Director of Student-Athlete Development at Texas Tech where he was responsible for programming at the J.T. & Margaret Talkington Department of Student-Athlete Development. He was primarily responsible for the support, career growth and community involvement of some 435 student-athletes covering 17 varsity teams. He also served as the main advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), lead administrator for the Strive Academic Program, served on the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee, and instructed courses for incoming student-athletes. Prior to his time at Texas Tech, Downing spent seven months serving as the Director of Athletic Events and Facilities at Cedarville. He earned his bachelor’s degree with a major in sport management and business administration from Ashland where he was a four-year starter on the football team from 2015-19. He earned Academic All-America honors in his senior season.
Downing earned a Master's in Sport Business Management and a Master of Business Administration from the DeVos Sport Business Management program at Central Florida. Downing is a member of the National Association of Academic and Student-Development Professionals (N4A). He participated in the NCAA’s Emerging Leaders Seminar in 2021, Effective Facilitators Workshop in 2022, and now serves as an NCAA DiSC Facilitator. Downing lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Morgan, their two children, Marleigh Jean and Maverick, and their dog, Willow.
