Wes Fleming enters his second year as Safeties Coach at Central Michigan after joining Matt Drinkall’s staff in December 2024. Fleming and Drinkall have worked together before at both Army and Kansas Wesleyan.
In his first season at Central Michigan in 2025, Fleming helped guide the Chippewas to their first bowl appearance in four years. The team recorded a 7-6 overall record and a 5-3 MAC mark. The Chippewas’ seven wins were their most since 2021. Fleming’s safeties unit was strong, with Caleb Spann, Elijah Rikard, Elijah Gordon, and Maddix Blackwell seeing extensive action. Spann ranked third on the team in tackles (54), with four pass breakups, and one interception. Rikard contributed 45 tackles and one interception. Gordon had 48 tackles, three breakups, and an interception. Blackwell added 42 tackles and an interception.
Before CMU, Fleming spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons at Cincinnati as a quality control coach with the defensive backs. He held a similar position at Nebraska in 2022 after stints at Army, and NAIA schools Midland (Nebraska) and Kansas Wesleyan.
In 2021, Fleming worked with Drinkall at Army and helped the Black Knights win nine games, including a victory over Missouri in the Armed Forces Bowl.
In 2019-20, Fleming was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Midland (Nebraska). In 2019, his offense set program records for points (397), points per game (36.1), and passing touchdowns (31).
In 2018, Fleming was offensive coordinator and special teams coordinator at Kansas Wesleyan under Drinkall. He helped the Coyotes to an undefeated season and set program records for wins (13), total yards (6,935), and points (676). They finished the season sixth in the NAIA. Ten Coyotes earned all-conference honors. Wesleyan swept conference player of the year awards.
A Chicago Heights, Ill., native, Fleming graduated from St. Ambrose (Iowa) in 2015 and began his coaching career at the school shortly thereafter. He earned a master’s in business administration from Kansas Wesleyan in 2017.
Fleming lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Julianne, and daughter Taytum.
