Was Central Michigan University's first professional athlete, playing both baseball and basketball on the play-for-pay level ... captain for three years in basketball and two years in baseball at CMU ... twice led baseball team in hitting, and in 1921 tossed two two-hitters and a one-hitter ... with Russ as its top player, CMU basketball won 45 and lost 18 from 1918-22 ... played one year of football ... played baseball professionally for Kalamazoo in the old Central League where he twice led the loop in batting ... played for Denver Tigers as a basketball pro ... served as Superintendent of Mt. Pleasant Schools from 1948-63 ... product of Midland High.
