MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University baseball coach Judd Folske announced the signing of three preps to national letters-of-intent.
Joining the Chippewas in the fall of 2001 will be: Jason Cairns, shortstop/pitcher, Traverse City Central, Ty Dunham, pitcher/infielder, Bay City Western, and David Latour, infielder, Barrie, Ontario.
"We signed three gifted athletes and excellent baseball players," Folske said. "Recruiting coordinator Steve Jaksa did a great job in filling our needs for the future. We'll sign three or four more in the spring."
Cairns is a 6-3, 180-pounder whose prep coach is Ian Hearn, a three-time Mid-American Conference (MAC) wrestling champion and a letterwinner in baseball at CMU.
"Jason is a complete athlete," Folske said. "He has good arm strength and a good glove, and he can run."
Dunham, a 6-4, 190-pounder who is the son of former CMU baseball player Dale Dunham, is coached by Chippewa Hall of Famer, Tim McDonald.
"Ty is a gifted baseball player who can be an impact player for us," Folske said.
Latour is a 6-0, 160-pound middle infielder who played for Team Ontario during the summers. His St. Peter's Secondary School does not play baseball.
"David's strength right now is with his glove," Folske said. "He can pick `em with the best and he has excellent range."
The Chippewas, who finished 41-17 in 2000, open the 2001 campaign at Minnesota on Feb. 11-12 with three games against the Gophers in the Metro Dome.
