Doug Walters is in his second year as an assistant on coach Jake Sabol’s Central Michigan baseball staff.
Walters is primarily responsible for working with the Chippewa hitters & catchers, while assisting in all recruiting efforts.
Walters’ first season at CMU was marked with many highlights, including road shutout wins over Power Five opponents Michigan State, Notre Dame and Central Florida and a dramatic walk-off victory over rival Western Michigan on Senior Day on storied Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
The Chippewas received the Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association, marking the fourth time in program history that the Chippewas have earned the prestigious honor. In addition, 12 Chippewas captured Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors, catcher/infielder Nick Dardas earned the MAC Medal of Excellence, and two seniors, Jacob Donahue and Ely Stuart, garnered All-MAC accolades.
A Brighton native, Walters served as an assistant under Sabol both at Northwood (2019-23) and at Alma (2017-18). He was also an assistant coach for the North Adams SteepleCats, a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, in 2018.
Walters helped lead Northwood to a 140-90-1 record including a 77-35 conference mark and four NCAA Division II Regional appearances. Prior to the 2022-2023 season at Northwood, he was promoted to associate head coach.
The 2023 Timberwolves captured Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships in their first year in the league after moving over from the GLIAC. That team finished 42-19 including 27-5 in the G-MAC. The 42 wins rank as the second highest total in program history.
In Walters’ four full seasons at Northwood, the Timberwolves posted four of the top seven winningest seasons in program history.
Walters played at Alma for Sabol, serving as the team captain and earning the team Most Valuable Player Award in 2016. He was a two-time All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association honoree during at Alma, and was named the college’s Breakthrough Athlete of the Year in 2015.
Walters earned a bachelor’s degree with a major in English from Alma in 2016. He resides in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Ana.
