THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University field hockey team (8-11 overall, 4-6 Mid-American Conference) closed out the 2000 campaign with a 4-2 loss to Miami at the MAC tournament on Nov. 3.
THE COACH--Cristy Freese is in her 15th season leading the Chippewa field hockey team. Freese, who earned MAC Coach of the Year honors in 1987 and 1989, led Central to its first MAC title in 1990. She has a 109-164-6 record with the Chippewas.
LAST WEEKEND--The Chippewas dropped a 4-2 decision to Miami in the MAC tournament on Nov. 3.
With the score tied at 2-2, Miami's Angela Snedden scored a pair of goals to give the RedHawks the win. Snedden scored with 8:47 to play and 1:13 left.
Snedden opened the scoring with a goal at the 11:33 mark of the first half to give Miami a 1-0 advantage.
The RedHawks increased their lead to 2-0 when Kari Roche scored with just 3:14 to go in the opening period.
CMU cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal from Krystal Yee (Victoria, British Columbia/Fr.) with just two seconds left in the first half.
Central scored first in the second half with a goal from Melissa Lazarevski (Rochester, NY/Jr.) at the 16:40 mark to knot the score at 2-2.
CMU goalie Janel Spero (Shoreham, NY/So.) made four saves while Miami's Marie Vaughn made nine.
FREESE ON LAST WEEKEND--"Miami jumped out to a 2-0 lead and we did a good job of fighting our way back. We got a goal at the end of the first half and came out in the second and played well. We made a couple of defensive mistakes and Miami capatalized. You have to give the RedHawks credit. When a team gives up a 2-0 lead it is hard to get the momentum back but they did and they also did an excellent job of keeping their composure."
FREESE ON THE SEASON-- "We are losing two starters but have 14 players returning. Our conference is really young so we will have some good competition for years to come. We will need to improve on some things in the offseason to be where we would like."
ALL-MAC--A pair of Chippewas were named to the All-MAC team. Melissa Lazarevski was named to the first team while Brianne Tallinger (Rochester, NY/Sr.) earned second-team honors. Lazarevski, who was a second-team pick in 1999, led CMU with 17 goals, five assists and 39 points. Tallinger, who also named to the second team in 1997, scored four points.
SENIOR SALUTE--Seniors April Hammer (Lancaster, NY) and Brianne Tallinger played in their final game in a CMU uniform. Hammer wrapped up her career with one goal, 27 assists and 29 points. Her 27 career assists ties her for first place on CMU's career assists list. Tallinger closed her CMU career with 26 goals, nine assists and 61 points. Her 26 goals are good for sixth place on CMU's career list while her 61 points are ninth.
MARVELOUS MELISSA--Melissa Lazarevski led the Chippewa offense all year long with 17 goals, five assists and 39 points. She also made her mark on the CMU season record book, placing second on the goals list and second in points. Lazarevski earned first-team All-MAC honors for her efforts.
