THE TEAM-- The Central Michigan University women's soccer team (10-10, 7-4) finished the season with its second playoff appearance in three years. The Chippewas hosted the conference quarterfinal match against Western Michigan last Tuesday and lost, 2-1. It put an end to the Chippewas four-game win streak and to the 2000-01 season.
THE COACH -- Mark Salisbury returns for his third season heading up the Central Michigan women's soccer program. Salisbury led the Chippewas to a 14-6-1 overall record and an 8-3 MAC tally in their second season. Salisbury came to CMU from the University of Missouri-Rolla where he served as the men's and women's soccer coach from 1995-97. He led the Missouri-Rolla women's team to a 15-3-1 record in 1997 and helped the men's squad to the 1997 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship.
IN CONCLUSION--"We had an up and down season," said head coach Mark Salisbury. "But, overall, we're happy with the season. Anytime you start out 3-8 and you turn it around to finish the regular season 10-9, it shows a lot of heart and character. We were disappointed that we lost early in the tournament but we're still a developing team."
ON AN EVEN KEEL--"It was a strange year for the Mid-American Conference," said Salisbury. "There were a lot of good teams but anyone could win on a given day. The conference has started to develop some parity. There are four or five good teams but the rest of the league has started to step up and soon it will become a competitive conference."
RECAP-- The Chippewas ended their season with a 2-1 loss to Western Michigan in the opening round of the Mid-American Conference tournament at the Soccer Field Inside Bennett Track on Tuesday afternoon.
The Broncos jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when Abi Morrell netted a goal on a perfect cornerkick at 8:24 and Brandi Buchhausen returned a clearing attempt into the Chippewa net at 29:37. It was the only two shots on goal Western Michigan tallied in the contest.
The Chippewas cut the lead in half at 80:12 when Laura Fedrigo (Livonia/Sr.) put CMU on the board. Central Michigan had several chances to tie the match late in the game but Bronco goalie Megan Ramey made three diving saves to keep Western Michigan on top. Beth Quiney (Milford/Jr.) started the game and allowed two goals. Kari Alexander (Midland/Fr.) finished the game uncontested.
GOING OUT IN STYLE-- Laura Fedrigo (Livonia/Sr.) put the exclamation point on the end of her college career last week. She tallied three goals in her last two games, including the lone goal in the conference quarterfinal match. She also earned the Mid-American Conference "Player of the Week" honors for her two-goal effort against Detroit in the regular season finale. She finishes her CMU career with 13 goals, seven assists and 33 points.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO ... -- Kjersten Kuhlman (St. Louis, Mo./Jr.) and Allison Campbell (Livonia/Jr.) earned second team all-conference accolades for their regular season performance. Kuhlman earned the honor for the second straight season. Kuhlman was a mainstay at midfield for CMU and posted one goal, three assists for five points in all 20 games.
Campbell led the team in goals, assists, points and shots. She posted 10 goals, eight assists, 28 points and pelted opponents with 60 shots. Her assist, point and shot totals were all season records. Campbell played in all 20 games as well.
RECORD DEAL-- Allison Campbell (Livonia/Jr.) transferred to CMU at the start of the 2000 season and has made an immediate impact. She has etched her name in the Chippewas' annals with most assists in a season (eight), most points in a season (28) and most shots in a season (60).
