Chippewas Fall To Ball State In OT

The Central Michigan University field hockey team (5-14 overall) fell in overtime to Ball State University (15-5) by a 3-2 margin in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Friday afternoon in Muncie, Ind. The Cardinals advance to Saturday's championship game.
CMU jumped to 2-0 first-half lead on goals from Cheryl Eglin (Wading River, NY) at the 7:44 mark and Crystal Smith (Lancaster, NY/Sr.) at 4:15. The Cardinals made 2-1 with just 58 seconds left in the first half on a goal from Sally Northcroft. CMU held the 2-1 lead until Ball State's Heather Weinhold tied it up with 20:37 left in the second half. The score stayed tied through the rest of the second half. Northcroft scored with 41 seconds left in overtime to give Ball State the 3-2 victory.
Goalie Janel Spero (Shoreham, NY/Fr.) made 20 saves and gave up three goals. Ball State outshot the Chippewas 37-10.
