JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The Central Michigan University baseball team (1-1 overall) opened the 2000 campaign with an 11-6 win over the University of Michigan and a 6-3 loss to Western Michigan University on Friday afternoon.
Against Michigan, senior Mike Fawcett (Marquette) tossed a complete game 13-hitter. He allowed six runs (five earned) with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Chippewas scored five runs with two outs in the second inning with sophomore Tim Bullinger (Jackson) keying the rally with a two-run double.
CMU scored twice in the fourth and three more in the sixth to pull away from the Wolverines.
Bryan Scheurer (Portland/Jr.) went three-for-five with three runs scored and three RBI while Jake Sanborn (Grand Ledge/Sr.), Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Fr.), and Mike Gates (Canton/Fr.) all added RBIs.
Versus Western Michigan, junior Nick Latra (Farmington/Jr.) took the loss in relief of starter Mike Steele (Midland/Sr.) who went 7 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts.
Bullinger hit two-for-four while Sanbron, Scheurer and Scott Pickens (Mount Pleasant/So.) each had one hit for the Chippewas.
CMU continues play in Florida against Xavier on Saturday at 10 a.m.
