Baseball Splits With Ohio

ATHENS, OH--The Central Michigan University baseball team (14-7 overall, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) opened the conference season with a doubleheader split with Ohio University (9-13 overall, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) on Saturday afternoon at Wren Stadium.
Ohio posted a 7-4 win in the first game while the Chippewas gained the split with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.
In the opening game, Central led, 4-3, but Ohio's Cory Keylor hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bobcats the 7-4 victory.
The Chippewas opened the scoring with a run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Ohio came back to score three in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage but CMU scored three in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
CMU was led by Mike Gates (Canton/Fr.) who hit one-for-three with a sacrifice fly and two RBI.
Starter Mike Fawcett (Marquette/Sr.) took the loss for the Chippewas. He pitched six innings and gave up eight hits and five runs while striking out two.
Central came from behind to take the win in the nightcap. CMU scored a run in the first inning on an RBI by Jake Sanborn (Grand Ledge/Sr.) but fell behind by a 2-1 count when Ohio scored single runs in the third and fourth innings.
CMU took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fifth inning on RBIs by Mike Crowley (Grand Rapids/Jr.) and Scott Pieratt (Mount Pleasant/Sr.). The Bobcats tied it up at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth but CMU scored a run in sixth inning on an RBI by Bryan Scheurer (Portland/Jr.) to take a 4-3 lead. The Chippewas extended their lead to 5-3 with a run in the seventh on a Sanborn home run.
Mike Steele (Midland/Sr.) picked up the complete-game victory to improve his record to 3-0. he gave up seven hits and three runs (two earned) and struck out seven.
Sanborn hit two-for-four with a home run, a double and two RBI while Pieratt went two-for-four with an RBI.
Central takes on Marshall in a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
