Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO--Strong pitching and timely hitting helped the Central Michigan University baseball team sweep a doubleheader from Western Michigan University on Saturday afternoon at Hyames Field.
The Chippewas won the opening game by a 5-1 count and took the nightcap, 8-7. With the wins CMU improves to 26-10 overall and 9-3 in the Mid-American Conference while Western falls to 16-18 overall and 5-9 in the MAC.
Western Michigan opened the scoring with a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead but the Chippewas answered with single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 advantage. Central extended its lead to 5-1 with three in the fifth. Tim Bullinger (Jackson/So.) had RBI singles in the fourth and fifth while Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Fr.) had a two-run home run in the fifth.
Senior right-hander Mike Fawcett (Marquette) held the Broncos to six hits and one run to improve his record to 5-2 on the year. He struck out three.
The Chippewas' 10-hit attack was led by four players with two hits each. Scott Pieratt (Mount Pleasant/Sr.), Matt Crowley (Grand Rapids/Jr.), Galloway and Bullinger all had two hits a piece.
CMU battled back from a 4-0 deficit in the nightcap to sweep the doubleheader.
With the score tied at 7-7, Galloway doubled to open the sixth inning and scored on Crowley's single to left.
WMU held a 4-0 lead after scoring four runs in the opening inning. The Chippewas answered with three in the second to pull to 4-3. The Broncos extended their lead to 7-3 with two in the second and one in fourth.
Central started its comeback with four runs in the fifth to tie it up at 7-7. Pieratt had a two-run single to tie the score at 7-7.
Jeff Garner (Hemlock/Fr.) got the win in relief of starter Mike Steele (Midland/Sr.). Garner pitched five innings and gave up four hits and one run while striking out six. His record now stands at 4-2 on the year. Steele pitched the first two innings and gave up eight hits and six runs (five earned).
Kevin Uzarski (Taylor/Sr.) went three-for-five with a double, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Chippewas. Pieratt went two-for-four with two RBI and Bullinger hit two-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI.
CMU takes on Western Michigan in a doubleheader on Sunday at Theunissen Stadium starting at 1 p.m.
