MOUNT PLEASANT--Northern Illinois University may have scored first in both games of its doubleheader with Central Michigan University but it was the Chippewas that got the last laugh.
The Chippewas swept a Mid-American Conference twinbill from the Huskies on Saturday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium. CMU won the opener, 6-3, and the nightcap, 11-1. Central is now 40-13 overall and 18-6 in the MAC while NIU is 22-31 overall and 9-15 in the conference.
CMU's 40 wins mark the eighth time the Chippewas have posted 40 or more wins in a season. The school record for wins is 47 that was set back in 1988.
In the opening game, NIU jumped to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Adam Seyb hit a single that scored a pair while the other run scored on a ground out.
Central came back with three runs in the third inning. Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Fr.) singled to score Kevin Uzarski (Taylor/Sr.) and Scott Pieratt (Mount Pleasant/Sr.) and Matt Crowley (Grand Rapids/Jr.) had a sacrifice fly that brought home Jake Sanborn (Grand Ledge/Sr.).
The Chippewas added to their lead with three more in the fourth inning to round out the scoring. Uzarski hit a solo home run while Sanborn smashed a two-run homer to make it 6-3.
CMU starter Mike Fawcett (Marquette/Sr.) went the distance, allowing six hits and three runs to raise his record to 7-2.
Sanborn and Uzarski led the Chippewa offense. Sanborn hit two-for-three with a home run and two RBI while Uzarski went two-for-four with a double, a home run and an RBI.
The Huskies also took the early lead in the nightcap when John Brock hit a home run on the first pitch of the game off CMU starter Mike Steele (Midland/Sr.).
Steele shut down the Huskies the rest of the way, only allowing one hit and striking out eight. The right-hander gave up just two hits to keep his record perfect at 8-0.
CMU scored two runs in the second inning to take the lead when Shaun Gragg (Grant/Sr.) hit a two-RBI double.
Central added single runs in the third and fourth innings before breaking loose with six runs in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead.
Sanborn had a sacrifice fly to score Bryan Scheurer (Portland/Jr.) in the third while Gragg hit a solo homer in the fourth.
The Chippewas smashed six hits and three home runs in the six-run fifth inning. Pieratt and Crowley both hit solo homers while Mike Gates (Canton/Fr.) had a two-run shot. Uzarski also had a double that scored a pair.
Sanborn hit his second home run on the day in the seventh inning to make it 11-1.
The Chippewa offense belted out 14 hits and 11 runs in the victory. Gragg hit two-for-two with three RBI, a home run and a double to lead the Chippewas. Uzarski, Sanborn and Gates all recorded two RBI for CMU.
