Big Inning Helps Baseball To Win Over Detroit

MOUNT PLEASANT--The Central Michigan University (37-13 overall) baseball team scored four runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 6-2 win over Detroit (14-23 overall) on Tuesday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium.
The Chippewas' big fifth inning came with the score tied at 2-2. Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Fr.) had an RBI double, Mike Steele (Midland/Sr.) had a single that scored a pair and the final run of the inning was scored on a double play.
Detroit had held the lead with two runs in the second inning but the Chippewas came right back with two in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 2-2. Jason Helps (Wyoming, Ontario/Jr.) and Scott Pickens (Mount Pleasant/Sr.) each had RBI singles for the Chippewas.
Nick Latra (Farmington/Jr.) picked up the win in relief to make his record 1-2 on the year. He pitched two innings of hitless ball in relief of starter Chad Pleiness (Scottville/So.). Pleiness went the first four innings and gave up two hits and two unearned runs while striking out three.
Pete Nemeth (Midland/Sr.) and Mike Fawcett (Marquette/Sr.) also saw action on the mound for CMU. Nemeth pitched two innings and gave up one hit and struck out four while Fawcett threw the final inning and gave up one hit.
The CMU 10-hit offense was led by three players with two hits. Pieratt hit two-for-five, Brian Issitt (Royal Oak/Sr.) went two-for-four with a run scored and Helps hit two-for-four with an RBI.
The Chippewas travel to the University of Michigan on Wednesday for a single game starting at 3 p.m.
