THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University women's soccer team (2-4 overall) start its Mid-American Conference schedule this weekend. The Chippewas host Bowling Green (2-2 overall) on Friday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. The Chippewas are 1-1 all-time against the Falcons. CMU won the last meeting, 2-1, at Bowling Green last season. On Sunday, CMU travels to Oakland University to take on the Golden Grizzlies (2-2-1 overall). The Golden Grizzles lead the all-time series, 2-0. The Chippewas lost the last meeting, 4-2, in Mount Pleasant last season.
THE COACH--Mark Salisbury returns for his third season heading up the Central Michigan women's soccer program. Salisbury led the Chippewas to a 14-6-1 overall record and an 8-3 MAC tally in their second season. Salisbury came to CMU from the University of Missouri-Rolla where he served as the men's and women's soccer coach from 1995-97. He led the Missouri-Rolla women's team to a 15-3-1 record in 1997 and helped the men's squad to the 1997 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship.
CONFERENCE KICKOFF--"Bowling Green is going to be a different team from the one we played a year ago," head coach Mark Salisbury said. "The Falcons have a new coach and they will be playing with a new enthusiasm and purpose. The Oakland Golden Grizzlies will be without their top player, Anita Rapp, who will be playing in the Olympics. However, they are well coached with speedy forwards. This weekend will be challenge for us."
LUCK OF THE DRAW--"The team felt a sense of relief with the win in overtime on Sunday," said Salisbury. "We've been in every single game but we've had some bad luck and things haven't worked out for us. On Sunday, we battled, had a little luck and we had some success."
RECAP--The Chippewas finished 1-1 in the second annual Chippewa Fall Classic last weekend.
The Chippewas dropped the first match to Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 3-2, in overtime on Friday afternoon when a Chippewa defender headed the ball into CMU's own goal.
Freshman Jamie Tekotte (Fairview, Pa) tied the game at one at 27:35 when she kicked a cross from Emilie VilleMonte (Farmington Hills/So.). Allison Campbell (Livonia/Jr.) knotted the game at two at 58:34 when she completed a two-on-one breakaway with Laura Fedrigo (Livonia/Sr.). Aryn McCumber (Rochester Hills/So.) made five saves on the day.
CMU bounced back on Sunday to capture the 3-2 victory over Wright State in double overtime when Laura Fedrigo scored the game winner on a one-on-one breakaway at 109:12.
Tekotte put the Chippewas on the board with her second goal of the year at 52:37. Wright State tied it one minute later but CMU captured the lead on a penalty kick by Campbell at 54:16. The Raiders posted their second goal in the last ten minutes to send the match into overtime. McCumber made six saves for the win.
Laura and Anne Fedrigo (Livonia/Jr.) and Tekotte each earned all-tournament honors for the Chippewas.
