THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University women's soccer team (2-6 overall, 0-1 Mid-American) play the Eastern Michigan University Eagles (3-2-2, 1-0 Mid-American) on Friday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. at Ypsilanti. These two teams last met in the final game of the 1999 season. The right to host the conference tournament went to Eastern Michigan as it defeated the Chippewas, 1-0. This is the third meeting in the series and EMU leads, 2-0. On Sunday, Sept. 24, CMU hosts the Toledo Rockets (1-4, 0-1 Mid-American) at 1 p.m. The Chippewas defeated UT in October of 1999, 3-0. Currently the series stands at one win a piece.
THE COACH -- Mark Salisbury returns for his third season heading up the Central Michigan women's soccer program. Salisbury led the Chippewas to a 14-6-1 overall record and an 8-3 MAC tally in their second season. Salisbury came to CMU from the University of Missouri-Rolla where he served as the men's and women's soccer coach from 1995-97. He led the Missouri-Rolla women's team to a 15-3-1 record in 1997 and helped the men's squad to the 1997 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship.
ROLE REVERSAL--"Neither Central Michigan nor Eastern Michigan are in the same position that they were in last season," said head coach Mark Salisbury. "Both teams need to do well this weekend if they want to compete in the conference. However, we need to worry about our team. We made some progress last weekend but it has to continue if we're going to be competitive."
PROGRESS REPORT--"The Bowling Green Falcons are a much improved program from a year ago," said Salisbury. "They were better than us at improtant times during the match and we didn't have 11 players playing well at the same time. We played better against Oakland on Sunday and I think we're making progress. It was the first time we played 90 minutes as a team and we were able to shut down a potent team."
RECAP--The Central Michigan University women's soccer team dropped two matches last weekend.
Last Friday, CMU lost to Bowling Green, 3-1, in the Mid-American Conference opener for both squads.
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead before Jill Adams (St. Louis, MO/Fr.) tallied her first goal of her college career at 54:32.
The Chippewas led Bowling Green in shots (19-11) and cornerkicks (8-1) but couldn't come up with the win. Aryn McCumber (Rochester Hills/So.) made four saves for the Chippewas.
In their last non-conference match until the final game of season, the Chippewas lost to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon, 1-0.
The only score came from the foot of Jill Gibson of the Golden Grizzlies at 35:40.
Aryn McCumber (Rochester Hills/So.) started the match and made one save while allowing one goal. Beth Quiney (Milord/Jr.) played the second half and was uncontested. The Chippewas launched five shots during the game.
FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH--All six freshmen have seen action in the first eight games of the season. In fact, a freshman has tallied a CMU goal in the four games the Chippewas have scored. Jamie Tekotte (Fairview, Pa.) leads all freshmen in scoring after a two-goal weekend two weeks ago.
NOTES--Jill Adams (St. Louis, Mo./Fr.) tallied her first college goal in her college career last Friday versus Bowling Green .
