THE TEAM - The Central Michigan University women's soccer team (12-9-1 overall, 8-4 Mid-American Conference) finished its season when it was topped by Miami in the MAC tournament finals at Athens, Ohio, 3-1.
The loss ended a record-breaking season for the Chippewas.
Allison Campbell (Livonia/Sr.) broke the season records for goals and points in a season with 14 and 33, respectively. She is the CMU career leader in goals (24), assists (13) and points (61). She also scored six game-winning goals, three in overtime, to set the CMU record and had the first hat trick in CMU history in the game against Buffalo. Kari Alexander (Midland/So.) set the season mark for shutouts (four) and shots (84).
Mark Salisbury wraps up his fourth season heading up the Central Michigan women's soccer program. Salisbury is 42-35-3 at CMU and owns a 100-80-11 mark as a head coach. He has led the Chippewas to three Mid-American Conference tournament bids in the last four years.
SEASON RECAP - "Our team faced a lot of adversity this season with injuries and other things but it never gave up," said head coach Mark Salisbury. "I am really proud of this team. How they fought until the final second and never let anything get them down. This senior class has left a great legacy for groups down the road to follow and they have helped to build this program into one of the top teams in the MAC."
LAST WEEK - Central Michigan advanced for the first-time to the MAC tournament finals before falling to Miami.
The Chippewas used two-goals by Allison Campbell to defeat Marshall in their first-round game, 2-1.
Campbell opened the scoring early in the first half when she scored on a pass from Sabrina Borgquist (West Bloomfield/Jr.). After Marshall tied it up at 1-1, Campbell and Borgquist hooked up again late in the second half to give CMU the victory, 2-1.
CMU advanced to the semifinal against MAC regular season champ, Ohio. That contest went into four overtimes before CMU was able to finish off the Bobcats in the 145th minute, 2-1.
Campbell scored off a rebound to give CMU the win. Erica Peterson (Fenton/Jr.) opened the scoring early in the second when she headed in a pass from Anne Fedrigo (Livonia/Sr.). Ohio tied it up with just over seven minutes remaining, forcing the match to overtime.
In the finals of the tournament, the Chippewas luck ran out against Miami as they fell, 3-1.
Emilie Villemonte (Farmington Hills/Jr.) scored the lone goal for CMU with Peterson picking up an assist.
Kari Alexander was the CMU goalkeeper for all three contests. She gave up only five goals and made 18 saves for the Chippewas.
TOURNEY TIME - "We are disappointed with the loss but our ladies played hard and that is all you can ask for," said Salisbury. "In the Ohio match, we weathered that storm in the first two overtimes and came out strong in the final two to pick up the victory. We just were not able to get some key breaks in the Miami game and that really hurt our chances. They are a great team and just got the best of us."
AWARD TIME - All-MAC and All-MAC tournament honors were handed out last week along with the MAC "Player of the Year", MAC "Coach of the Year" and MAC "Freshman of the Year." The Chippewas were well represented with Allison Cambell being named to both the All-MAC first team and the MAC tournament team. Cari VanDyck (Medina, Ohio/So.) was named the second All-MAC team and also to the tournament team. Kjersten Kuhlman (St. Louis, Mo./Sr.) and Sabrina Borgquist were named to the All-MAC second team and Kari Alexander was named to the tournament team. Miami's Andrea Cunningham was named the MAC "Player of the Year," Eastern Michigan's Scott Hall was named "Coach of the Year" and Marshall's Amanda McMahon was named "Freshman of the Year."
CMU SOCCER NEWS AND NOTES - The 144:45 match against Ohio is the longest in CMU history and the second longest in MAC history.
