Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.--The Central Michigan baseball team dropped a pair of games to Minnesota on Monday afternoon at the Metrodome.
The Golden Gophers rallied in both games to post a 5-4 win in game one and a 6-3 victory in game two.
In the opening game, Minnesota got single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to hold a 3-0 advantage late in the game.
The Chippewas staged a comeback with three runs in the seventh inning to tie the score at 3-3. Brad Reid had a pinch hit two-run single and Bryan Scheurer had an RBI single.
CMU took the lead in the following inning when Mike Galloway singled, stole second and scored on a Tim Groves single.
Minnesota came back in the bottom half of the eighth with a run to tie it at 4-4 and won the game in the ninth when Scott Welch opened the inning with a solo home run.
Joey Fahndrich took the loss in relief. He gave up three hits, two runs in one inning of action.
Jason Shupe picked up the win for Minnesota. He pitched 2 2/3 innngs and gave up four hits and one run.
The nightcap started the same with Minnesota jumping to a quick 3-0 lead with one run in the second and two runs in the third inning.
The Chippewas responded with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to knot the score at 3-3.
Ryan Krueger singled, Matt Crowley walked, Reid had an RBI single and then Jason Helps knocked in a pair with a double.
The Golden Gophers had their own big inning to put the Chippewas away. Minnesota got three runs in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.
J.D. Wheeler started and took the loss. He gave up seven hits and six runs in four innings. Wheeler struck out seven.
Jay Gagner got the win in relief for Minnesota. He gave up one hit and struck out four in 3 1/3 innings of work.
The Chippewas (1-2) return to action on March 2 taking on Florida.
