Baseball Splits With Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill.--Central Michigan scored a pair of runs in the 10th inning of the nightcap to avoid a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies won the opening game by a 4-2 count while Chippewas had an 11-9 victory in the second game.
Northern Illinois scored three runs in the fourth inning en route to a 4-2 win in the opening game.
With the bases loaded, Trevor Stocking and Jason Ciarrachi had RBI singles while Dan Urban scored on an error by the rightfielder to give the Huskies a 4-1 advantage.
The Chippewas got a run back in the seventh inning on a Bryan Scheurer RBI single to make it 4-2 but it wasn't enough to catch NIU.
Northern Illinois scored first with a run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 advantage.
The Chippewas tied it up in the top of the fourth when Brad Reid doubled and Mike Galloway advanced to third and scored on an error by the leftfielder.
Jeff Garner took the loss for the Chippewas. He gave up four hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Nick Zastrow held the Huskies to just three hits in the final 2 1/3 innings.
Reid had two hits to lead the Chippewas.
In the nightcap, Central scored a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning to snap a 9-9 tie in posting an 11-9 victory.
Tim Bullinger had an RBI double to score CMU's first run in the extra session and later scored on a wild pitch to give the CMU an 11-9 lead.
Closer Gavin Gillette retired the Huskies in order in the bottom of the 10th to give the Chippewas the win. Gillette gave up two hits and two unearned runs in 2 2/3 innings to improve his record to 4-0.
Central opened the game with a commanding 7-0 lead with five runs in the first and two in the second.
Scott Pickens had the big blow in the first inning, a two-out grand slam that gave CMU a 5-0 lead.
In the second inning, Gates and Matt Crowley each had RBI singles to increase the lead to 7-0.
The Huskies started to chip away at the CMU lead. They scored one in the second and two in the third to make it 7-3.
CMU got a run back in the fifth when Tim Groves doubled to score Crowley.
NIU scored three more in the seventh to close the gap to 8-6.
Brad Reid crushed a solo home run in the eighth inning to up the lead to 9-6 but the Huskies tied it up with one in the eighth and two in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extra innings.
Galloway, Crowley and Bullinger all had two hits each to lead the CMU offensive charge.
CMU (24-15, 9-6 Mid-American Conference) and NIU (20-19 overall, 3-11 MAC) close out the weekend series with a single game on Sunday.
