Baseball Holds Off Michigan State

MOUNT PLEASANT--Central Michigan held off a ninth inning Michigan State rally to post a 5-4 win over the Spartans on Tuesday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium.
Michigan State scored three runs in the ninth inning and had the bases loaded when relief pitcher Jason Frank got Kevin Crews on a bounce out to end the game.
The Chippewas had held a 5-1 advantage going into the top of the ninth.
The Spartans opened the game with a run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 advantage.
Central answered with a run in its portion of the first.
Mike Galloway had a fielder's choice RBI to score Jason Helps and tie the score at 1-1.
The remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the sixth inning when the Chippewas scored a single run to take a 2-1 lead.
With two outs, Brad Reid singled to left and scored on a Matt Crowley double to left to give Central its first lead of the game.
The Chippewas scored two more runs in the seventh inning on a Galloway double to right centerfield to increase the lead to 4-1.
CMU added a run in the eighth inning when Crowley stole home. Crowley had reached base on a double and advanced to third on a Scott Pickens single.
Chad Pleiness picked up the win for the Chippewas with a strong outing in relief of starter Jeff Opalewski. He held the Spartans hitless in three innings of work to make his record 4-2.
Frank picked up his first save of the year in keeping MSU from tying the game up in the ninth.
CMU pounded out 10 hits in the win. Crowley went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of doubles while Reid and Pickens both had a pair of hits.
The Chippewas (26-15) takes on Michigan State on Wednesday night at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing at 7 p.m.
