Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Western Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT--Western Michigan avenged Friday's loss to Central Michigan with a doubleheader sweep of the Chippewas on Saturday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium.
The Broncos bombed the Chippewas, 13-5, in the opening game and erased an 8-0 deficit to post a 10-9 victory in the nightcap.
The long ball helped the Broncos to a 13-5 win in the opening game. WMU crushed five home runs en route to the victory. The Broncos outhit CMU, 16-9.
Western Michigan got on the scoreboard first with an unearned run in the opening inning.
The Chippewas came right back to take the lead with three runs in their portion of the first.
Jason Helps had an RBI single that scored Bryan Scheurer to tie the score at 1-1. Scheurer had reached base on a bloop single and advanced to third on a two-base error on a pickoff attempt. A walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases for Tim Groves who delivered a two-out single that scored a pair of runs.
The pitchers took over in the second and third innings before the Broncos pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the fourth inning. James Galla's double in the fourth scored two runs to knot the score at 3-3.
A pair of home runs in the fifth inning by Western Michigan chased starter Jeff Garner out of the game. John Toner crushed a three-run homer and Chad Tarpley had a two-run shot to put give the Broncos an 8-3 advantage.
A perfectly executed suicide squeeze scored another run in the inning for the Broncos to make it 9-3.
Western kept up its offensive explosion in the sixth. Mike Scott and Sam Flamont slammed back-to-back solo home runs while WMU also had an RBI double to make it 12-3.
The Chippewas picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Matt Crowley scored on an error to cut the Western Michigan lead to 12-4.
Both squads scored a run in the seventh to make the final margin 13-5.
Garner was tagged with the loss to make his record 4-4 on the season. He gave up nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) in four innings of work.
Central jumped to an early 8-0 advantage before the Broncos came back to post a 10-9 win in the nightcap.
The Chippewas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the first inning.
Central got the first two batters on base courtesy of a pair of walks. Mike Galloway had an RBI single to drive in Scheurer while Jason Helps scored on a sacrifice fly by Crowley.
The Chippewas made it 3-0 in the second when Scott Pickens scored on a wild pitch.
CMU increased its lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the third inning.
The Chippewas loaded the bases with no outs when Galloway and Crowley both singled and Tim Groves was hit by a pitch. Ryan Krueger had a sacrifice fly to score Galloway. Pickens got on base with a bunt single to load the bases again for Tim Bullinger who had a sacrifice fly to score Crowley. Groves scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Central was held off the scoreboard in the fourth but the Chippewas returned to their scoring ways with two runs in the fifth.
Groves led off the inning with a solo home run shot to left field and Scheurer added an RBI double to give CMU an 8-0 advantage.
CMU starter Chad Pleiness held the Broncos hitless until the sixth inning when the leadoff hitter Scott broke up the no-hitter with a single and the next batter Flamont doubled to put runners on second and third. A wild pitch scored Western's first run and another run came across the plate on an error cut the Central lead to 8-2.
The Broncos scored two more unearned runs in the sixth and added a solo home run by Flamont in the seventh to make it 8-5.
The Chippewas made it a four-run game again with a score in the bottom of the seventh.
The Broncos made a move in the eighth inning with three runs to close the gap to 9-8.
Central couldn't score in its portion of the eighth, setting the stage for the Broncos' rally.
A ground out RBI by Chris Richter tied the score at 9-9 and a Galla double gave Western Michigan its first lead of the game at 10-9.
WMU's Tyler Grinnell came on to pitch in the ninth and he struck out the Krueger and Pickens and got Bullinger to ground out in posting his first save of the year.
Gavin Gillette took the loss for the Chippewas to drop his record to 4-1. He gave up three hits and two runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Pleiness had a strong outing in a non-decision. He gave up two hits and four runs (two earned) in 5 1/3 innings.
The Chippewas (28-17 overall, 11-8 Mid-American Conference) travels to Western Michigan (16-21 overall, 11-8 MAC) for a single game on Sunday.
