Baseball Drops Doubleheader

MOUNT PLEASANT--Timely hitting helped Eastern Michigan to a doubleheader sweep of Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium.
The Eagles won by scores of 10-5 and 4-3 to improve their record to 10-19 overall and 7-3 in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas fall to 18-12 and 7-4 in the MAC.
In the opening game, Eastern Michigan jumped to a commanding 6-0 lead with a run in the first inning and five more in the second. The big hit in the second inning was a grand slam by Nick Soliz.
The Chippewas got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the third inning.
Brad Reid and Matt Crowley each had RBI singles to cut the EMU lead to 6-2.
The Eagles extended their lead to 8-2 with two more runs in the fourth before the Chippewas countered with a pair of home runs in the fourth inning to slice the lead to 8-5.
Ryan Krueger smashed a solo homer while Jason Helps recorded his 10th homer of the year with a two-run shot.
The Eagles rounded out the scoring with single runs in the sixth and seventh while holding the Chippewas off the scoreboard for the final three innings.
Starter Chad Pleiness took the loss for the Chippewas. He gave up 10 hits and eight runs (six earned) in 3 2/3 innings.
The Eagles scored three times in the top of the ninth in posting a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
Central held a 2-1 advantage before Eastern scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead.
CMU scored a run in the bottom of the ninth when pinch-hitter Tim Groves singled to score Mike Galloway to make it 4-3 but Central couldn't get any closer.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning.
The Chippewas took the lead with a run in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Helps doubled and scored on a ground out by Galloway in the fourth and Scott Pickens belted a home run to left in the fifth.
The Chippewas held the Eagles off the scoreboard for six innings until EMU broke through in the ninth.
Dan Horvath pitched a complete game in taking the loss for CMU. He gave up 10 hits and four runs and struck out eight. Horvath is 4-2 on the year.
Picking up the complete-game win for EMU was Phil Kommer. He gave up eight hits and three runs (two earned).
Central hosts EMU in the series finale on Sunday.
