Baseball Wraps Up Weekend Sweep Of Toledo

MOUNT PLEASANT--Central Michigan closed out play in Theunissen Stadium in grand style with a 15-8 victory over Toledo on Sunday afternoon.
The win gives the Chippewas a weekend sweep of the Rockets and a spot in the Mid-American Conference tournament that starts on Wednesday at Ball State. CMU is 34-22 overall and 16-12 in conference play.
Central slugged a school-record seven home runs including three in a seven-run second inning outburst.
Toledo took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the opening inning but the Chippewas stormed back with seven runs in the second inning to make it 7-1.
Mike Galloway led off the inning with a solo home run to center field while Scott Pickens hit a two-run shot to right center.
With two outs in the inning, Tim Bullinger doubled and Bryan Scheurer singled to drive in Bullinger. Jason Helps followed with the third home run of the inning, a two-run shot to right field and Brad Reid had an RBI single to round out the scoring.
The Rockets got a run back in the third inning when Chris Arvay homered to make it 7-2 but the Chippewas came back with four more runs in the bottom of the third.
Pickens led off the inning with his second home run of the day. Helps got on with a walk, stole second and scored on an error by the shortstop while Mike Gates swatted a two-run homer to center to give CMU a commanding 11-2 advantage.
Central added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Bullinger.
Toledo score four unanswered runs to cut the lead to 12-6. The Rockets scored one in the fifth and three in the sixth.
CMU got back to its scoring ways with a run in the seventh on a Helps solo home run to right to increase the lead to 13-6.
Toledo scored two more runs in the eighth before the Chippewas rounded out the scoring with two final runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Ryan Krueger crushed the seventh home run of the day with a two-run poke to left center to make the final margin 15-8.
Starter Jeff Opalewski got the win for the Chippewas. He gave up five hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings of work to raise his record to 2-3 on the year.
The CMU 18-hit attack was led by Pickens and Helps who each crushed two home runs. Pickens hit 4-for-5 with three RBI while Helps went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
